 Aero: turbo for my B18?
I am not real familiar with B-series engines, just getting my feet wet really. What would be a good turbo on the stock LS?

Re: Aero: turbo for my B18?
There are plenty of good options. A GT35R would be totally pointless and laggier than needed on a stock B18.
If you figure 300whp as a safe max for stock LS rods, thats what I hear thrown around anyway.
A H1C, HY35, HE351CW, HX35 are decent Holset options, with 400+++ whp potential , and will spool significantly faster than a 35r. They are all found as the stock turbo on the Dodge pickups. They are built like tanks, and can be had used and in excellent shape for under $300 easily. Dan's truck is a testament to how well they are built. We bolted an upgraded compressor wheel on his stock H1C, it had something like 300,000 on it, and it still survived quite a while at 40+ lbs of boost. One guy on DSMtalk has run the Small H1C in a BEP exhaust housing, it spools faster than his 16g did, and flows enough to make 20-30 more hp at 2-3lbs less boost.
Then there is the good old TO4E 50 trim, and 57trim. the 57 sucks on a DSM but is pretty popular on B series. There is also the good old straight T3 .60/.63 a/r. Which will be fairly close to a 16g, but with different hotside options.
A 16g or 20g would work too. Honestly though I would go with something else. You can get one of the holsets that will make far more power, spool damn near as quickly. They also have a standard t3 flange, opening up lots more options if you have a t3 flanged manifold if you should ever choose to upgrade.

Self Cooling Intercooler

I'm thinking of just throwing a cheap hmt set-up on my car for a short time, there are some people in this town I want to race.

Not fales, you get what you pay for. Turbos to Hookers, you get cheap hooker she has aids. You get classy hooker she only has goneerrea. You buy nice new turbo Name Brand it is warrantied to last for a certain period of time and usually but not always lays down good numbers. On the other hand you can buy a cheapo ebay one with no warranty, or a 30 day warranty, and have limited support as well as a limited life span and powerband.

Rodney is putting down 270ish on an eBay turbo. It won't last forever, but hell it was $160. If it breaks beyond repair, buy another for $160. Billy, Luke, and Derek all have hmt set-ups on their cars, all are running just fine...

Re: Aero: turbo for my B18?
So what do you think they would lay down if they spent the extra 500 for a real turbo, and maybe another 500 for a good manifold? I just know you get what you pay for.

Re: Aero: turbo for my B18?
if you are not building the engine at this point, then just go cheap. used turbos are also an option. again rolling the dice, but if its lasted xx,xxx miles, chances are it will last for awhile longer... just my

I doubt there is much difference in the output from a real Garrett and a Chinese Garrett. The problem with them is the durability and craftsmanship. 270ish on a stock B16 with injectors and a pump is about right...
