Post Holset HE551V VGT Turbo Information
Just won this one on ebay. HE551V. For diesels up to 16l and Holset rates the HE500 series for 295-650hp. Those are diesel numbers of course. Probably closer to 900 or 1000 on a gasoline engine. I'm expecting samewhere around a 67mm compressor wheel.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... &viewitem=

It will be going on one of our combines at home as another VGT experiment. I'll be measuring all the wheels and VGT nozzle area to include it in the VGT info on here when it comes.

Took it apart today and took some measurements and more pictures. It is one big SOB.

Wheel measurements.

Compressor
Inducer 71.75mm
Exducer 108.1mm

Turbine
Inducer 86mm
Exducer 75mm

From some clay and my calculations the VGT has an operating range of approximately 9cm^2 - 31cm^2
The compressor is a machined wheel that looks like what people refer to as a "billet" machined wheel. I stupidly forgot to try and determine whether it is aluminum or titanium. The backing plate was a bit rusty, otherwise the thing looks like its in great shape with normal shaft play.

Here as a size comparison to the HE351VE turbo I have on my car, the one most people think is big.

How much do they normally go for?

Most of the ones that are unused on ebay are listed for 1000-1200 or so. Retail is WAY over that somewhere.

There isn't any way of knowing really.
Only thing I have to go off of is it says no real shaft play.

They tend to last far a very long time. Other than the one that I had die from metal contaminated oil, none of the equipment we have had has died.

that turbo is just beyond normal lol. what is the range of a/r on the 500 series???. and also how much does that one weigh. the 351 we have is a heavy weight around 50lbs, but that one must be a monster hehehe.

Its marked as a 31cm housing, which would be the maximum size. I haven't had a chance to measure the minimum yet. It is a heavy SOB, the shipping weight on the UPS label is 69lbs. I haven't had a chance to weigh it yet either myself.

Jeeze man. Ok, now here's the fun part, have you seen/gotten the compressor map yet on this from Holset? I know we had some luck lobbying them over on TurboFord on the HE431, I would love to see the 351, 431, and 551 on top of one another...

I don't have time right now to post them and I need to call my dad again to verify, but I do have some results/impressions of it. He got it mounted a few days ago. Lets say he is pretty happy so far.

The adapter is ugly, but it works and is strong. He had to raise the hood on the combine by a few inches due to the adapter height, and the large size of the turbo.

I'm watching it, but not bidding haha. I don't have anything to put it on now.

There is a VGT on two of my parents combines now, a HE431V and a HE551V. :ohnoes:

I am curious what the green wire is coming from the CHRA and what its purpose is?

I have just bought a large VGT Holset on ebay but not sure what model (ID plate missing). I will measure it up when I recieve it.

Thanks.
